Many residents of this central Florida area moved to Citrus County seeking the safe, peaceful and tranquil lifestyle offered here. The good news about Pine Ridge Estates is that it is a one of a kind equestrian community that satisfies these desires. The not so good news is that residents of Pine Ridge have on occasion had this peace and tranquility disturbed by individuals engaging in criminal activity.
To address this issue residents partnered with the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) and created a volunteer community crime watch activity. They called the unit P.R.I.D.E. (Pine Ridge In Defense of the Estate). P.R.I.D.E volunteers operate two Sheriff’s cruisers to patrol Pine Ridge Estates and the surrounding areas. Our drivers have direct contact with the Sheriff’s Dispatch with authority to request a deputy be dispatched to a specific scene when necessary. Our goal is to be very visible and establish a physical presence that would serve to deter criminal activity. Our responsibility is to be “observant and report any suspicious activity.”
In addition to patrolling the estate, P.R.I.D.E. will when requested make regular security checks of the homes of seasonal residents (snow birds) when they are up North or our permanent residents when on extended vacations. We also check and monitor the estates critical infrastructure, utilities and water supply.
P.R.I.D.E. crime watch volunteers patrol the area in 4 hour shifts. Each volunteer is responsible to complete one 4 hour patrol shift every other week. Shifts are 8:00 am – 12:00pm; 12:00pm – 4:00pm or 4:00pm – 8:00pm.
If you aren’t quite sure about getting involved or handling the responsibility try our “ride along” program. You can ride along with one of our seasoned volunteers to learn what we do and get hands-on crime watch experience.
Volunteering with P.R.I.D.E. is a wonderful, rewarding way to serve your community. If you would like to volunteer please call Capt. Josephier Brown at 352-270-8579 for information and application or contact the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office at 352-527-3703.
