News for the Civic Association
Fall is finally here and the temps are reasonable again. Lots of fall festivals, holiday markets, etc.
Here in Pine Ridge, PRPOA is sponsoring a Holiday Carnival on Saturday, December 8, 11:00-3:00. Tickets are FREE and available at the Community Center office. The ticket entitles you to FREE food and there will be FREE carnival games. Did I mention that it’s FREE?!
We need some volunteers to run the carnival booths (like ring toss, basketball hoops, etc.), so if you can offer an hour or two of your time you’ll get to meet other Pine Ridge residents and play the role of a carnie for a bit. Please contact the Pine Ridge office to sign up for a shift. 352-746-0899
Pine Ridge Pickers will perform our quarterly clean up of PR Blvd on the Friday before the carnival. Meet me at the Community Center at 8:30 on Dec 7 and we’ll spruce up the Boulevard.
Our Angel Tree is up and there are tags for you to take if you’re so inclined. We request you purchase a $25 gift card from Walmart so that we can pass them on to the residents at the Citrus County Abuse Shelter Association (CASA). The residents have escaped abusive relationships, sometimes with only the clothes on their backs. By providing a gift card they can choose what they need the most, whether it’s another pair of underwear or perhaps a toy for their child. Please sign the ledger with the tag number you’ve taken then return the tag and gift card to any Civic Association Board member or put it in my mailbox in the PR office.
We also have information on how to donate to the Marine Corps League’s Injured Warriors of Florida organization. All donations go to Florida veterans. Checks can be made to MCL 1139, and write “Injured Warriors” in the memo.
In November we had to move our meeting a week because of Veteran’s Day. Consequently, we had a pretty small turnout to hear April DiLorenzo. She was unbelievably organized and gave us several hand outs that I guarantee will come in handy for everyone. She gave insight into the options available in Citrus County whether you plan to “age in place” in your home, downsize into a senior-living facility, or eventually will need additional medical or physical assistance. The business of elder care has progressed beyond the old institutional “nursing home” or “God’s waiting room.” There are now many options available, and most are customizable based on needs and desires.
The US median age is at an all time high of 37.5 years (1), while the median age in Citrus County is 55.7 years (2), and Pine Ridge’s median age is 62.2 (3)!!! As much as we don’t want to admit it, we’re all getting older (duh!), and we need to be prepared for the worst while hoping for the best. So, if you missed the presentation, we do plan to have her back next year, and you really owe it to yourself and your loved ones to know what’s out there for us or them.
In December our meeting will be fairly short and feature Lisa Gonzales and the Young Marines performing a Presentation of the Colors.
Lastly, I’d love to spend New Year’s Eve with you at our NYE dinner and party. $25 gets you 4 sets of Bingo and dinner catered by The Olive Tree featuring chicken Marsala or prime rib, salad, potatoes, green beans, rolls, dessert, and champagne. RSVP to Louise Mathis no later than December’s chicken and bingo on Dec 15.
